From the Millevaches Plateau to the volcanoes park

You will enjoy the gentle pleasures of life in the Auberge du Vieux Chêne, a former Auvergnate farm amidst a prairie scattered with fruit trees. As soon as you leave you will sink in a valley between its wooded slopes which display some more depth to the gorges of Rhue.

After the Vaussaire dam by the hydroelectric plant you will follow the stream of the little Rhue to reach Riom-ès-Montagnes and the natural regional Park of Volcanoes.

Upon leaving the town a beautiful panorama stands out on the upper Cézallier plateaus, the Mounts Dore, a part of the Mounts of Cantal and the Falgoux valley which can be particularly distinguished from the ruins of the Apchon castle ; however it is the gilded-wood retable from the XVIIth century church which is worth visiting in this town.

You will reach the Rhue valley at Cheylade. Discover the painted coffers on the church vault.

The road winds up towards the Serres pass before hanging to the Puy Mary slopes, besides it offers a unique view over the valley and the Mounts of Cantal.

You will leave the Peyrol pass along a corniche road which overlooks the Falgoux circus. You will distinguish the crests of Puy Griou and the Plomb of Cantal. Following the Jordanne stream and its legend which claimed it carried along golden nuggets, you will reach Aurillac the Haute Auvergne capital. Visit the Saint-Etienne castle which houses the museum of Values. To put an end to this day you will reach the Cère valley.
