Fortified villages, Cistercian abbey and Chablis vineyard

After having left the Malaisy castle, at the heart of Fontenay valley, you will cross a verdant countryside all along the Bourgogne canal.

Alise-Sainte Reine is the first prominent town in this itinerary, on the very site of Alésia which saw César’s victory on Vercingétorix’s Gaul army.

You will have the opportunity to visit the digs which have unearthed many remains from the entrenched Gaul camp.

You will keep on crossing l'Auxois towards the village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, a fortified town in the Middle Ages, this perched village has maintained its houses, its fortifications and its ramparts. You will resume the road in direction of the capital of Auxois. A XIVth century Semur-en-Auxois, a fortified place deserves a stop to admire the fortifications, built on a cliff of pink granite towering the gully with the the Armançon river winding its way in the bottom.

You will sink in the Auxerroise countryside. You will discover Epoisses and its castle at the heart of a region famous for its cheese.
Then you will come near the valley of Cousin which runs along Avallon. The fortified town is perched on a promontory. A particularly scenic site will appear while strolling on the ramparts.

Later you will continue your way, though the Cousin valley to discover l'Avalonnais which will lead you up to Mailly-le-Château where a charming hotel is waiting for you in a listed site.
